This small village near Sulmona sits in the Peligna valley along the bank of the Sagittario river, at the foot of a large hill called Colle Rotondo, just off the A25 autostrada. It is located between the Parco Nazionale della Maiella and Parco Nazionale di Abruzzo Lazio e Molise, two large National parks in the central Appenine mountains. Province: L'Aquila (AQ)
Altitude: 580 m above sea level
Population:  1,590
Zip code:  67030

HISTORICAL INFORMATION:
The town as we see it today was first constructed in the Middle Ages by the feudal families Sangro, Mariconda, and Mormile and then was passed to Carlo VIII. The ducal palace is still standing but has not been well-preserved. It was converted into a residence during Renaissance times and has an interesting inner court.
Of archeological interest are the ruins of a megalithic wall and other findings which are a testament to the town's ancient inhabitancy. The church "Madonna della Neve" (Virgin Mary of the snow) also holds interesting archaeological ruins of the Roman floor and stele from the pagan temple the church was built on. It also houses three rare wooden statues of the Virgin Mary and child, one from the 13th century and two from the 15th century, and a local 16th-century tempera painting of Saint Trinity.
