There are some archeological findings that prove that the territory where Celenza sul Trigno is now located was once populated during the Roman Empire. The name Celenza has different origins. Some speculate that it comes from the latin word Caelum. In the 1200s, some documents found, mention the town’s name as Coelentia. In the mid 1400s, the barons Monteferrante ruled the village, under the authority of King Alfonso V of Aragona, then it was passed on to the Caracciolo family of San Buono.  The d’Avalos family, the dukes of Guglionesi and then again the Caracciolo family were the last ones to lead the village until the feudal times were finished. During the feudal times a look out tower was built in order to fortify the village, Torre della Fara, named because it was located in the contrada Farra.
